ARTISTIC STATEMENT

I said to my soul, be still, and wait without hope
For hope would be hope for the wrong thing; wait without love,
For love would be love of the wrong thing; there is yet faith
But the faith and the love and the hope are all in the waiting.
Wait without thought, for you are not ready for thought:
So the darkness shall be the light, and the stillness the dancing.

~ ‘East Coker’, T.S. Eliot ~

Light and Stillness

The gate was open that evening, at about five o’clock on 9 April 2008. We could not resist stepping into so mysterious a place—and at the heart of the campus no less! What awaited us was a spectacle we had never seen before, nor would ever see again on our return visits: all was still but the dust particles dancing in the shafts of afternoon light, gloriously pouring in through the openings above the gallery on the west side—a scene of theatricality in a dead theatre. For that is what it undeniably was; and yet, amidst the pervasive dark air of death there was something adamantly alive.

We knew at that time that the Experimental Theatre was a cultural icon—an important part of the University’s, and the nation’s, heritage. And how unfortunate that it was for years invisibly tucked away in the heart of the University and ignored by the masses.

Theatre and Theatricality

In the last quarter of 2009, news of its impending restoration stirred in us a desire to ‘capture’ the place as it was, in all its raw beauty and gritty grandeur. But we did not want to stop at pictures of the building—we wanted to take pictures built around the theme of ‘theatre and theatricality’, to convey a sense of the E.T.’s function as much as its form. We sought to evoke a sense of place, and of the formidability of the theatre.

And so on our second return visit—the principal shoot in October 2009—we created a ‘living theatre’ of sorts in the E.T., complete with actors, stage lights, an audience, musicians and even a dressing room. The French have a word for these elements we enacted and depicted—mise-en-scène—which constitutes visual elements like lighting, space, set design and costumes.

Resurrection

One may wonder, just how much mileage one can get out of a ruined theatre? Quite a bit, apparently! We traipsed into a world that was beyond our imagination, and it gets richer with every repeated visit. The E.T. has been resurrected, and we are honoured to have had this opportunity to write the prologue to the next phase of its bid to be the centre of performing arts in the University of Malaya and beyond.

Enjoy the ‘show’!
